Microsoft have recently launched an new search engine called Bing which is now available to the public. Bing is available at www.bing.com and replaces Microsoft Live Search.

So how is Bing different to Google – lets take a look:
- Bing shows a preview of the web pages in the search results when you hover at the right side of the search results.
- Bing doesn’t recognize misspellings and returns no results in these cases.
- Bing will display fewer results if it believes it has understood your intent.
- Bing’s video search lets you watch videos without leaving the search engine.
- Wikipedia searches can be displayed inline in the search results without leaving the Bing site by clicking the “Enhanced view” link.
- Bing features a different background image every day.
- Bing’s homepage loads very quickly because the search box and logo load first. You can turn off the background image.
- Bing stores your search history and lets you return to your most recent searches of the last few days.

The Benefits of Validating your XHTML & CSS
Future proofing your website
XHTML and CSS coding standards are defined with future developments in mind. With these coding standards all future releases of web browsers and other web content readers will be based.
So, by having a webpage that has valid markup you are future proofing your website for future releases of browsers, search engine robots, screen readers etc.
Without doing this you run the risk that your webpages will not render correctly in future versions of browsers. Imagine how many visitors you could lose if a future version of Internet Explorer (currently has 80% use world-wide) cannot render your webpage. So, by employing a small amount of time upfront to validate your markup could save you loads compared to rewriting your website because users cannot browse your website.
Search engines
By having valid markup and semantic html you will be presenting a webpage to the search engines that they will be able to fully interpret and index correctly. With invalid markup a search engine could easily attempt to index a webpage but get confused about what is content and what is markup and therefore not all of your content will be indexed. This will of course have a knock on to you SEO as your ranking may be lower that it otherwise would.
Accessibility
Making your website accessible to all users and devices will bring unlimited advantages to you. By alienating disabled users or mobile devices you could be losing untold numbers of visitors to your website. By having valid markup you are paving the way to the Single A level of WCAG, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
Achieving valid markup
There are plenty of free online tools available to make the process of validation easier and I have listed just a few here.

Semantic HTML
Semantic HTML is basically a way of writing your webpages in a structured way. This covers many areas such as use of headers (H1, H2, H3 …), use of paragraphs, styling etc.
The correct usage of Headers in your webpage can be a little confusing at first so I have drawn up a quick list here of simple rules:
-
Each webpage must have at least one heading
-
I have only one H1 heading per webpage
-
H1 heading is the first heading on the webpage
-
Try to use the webpage keywords in the H1 heading
-
Order headings correctly and never skip headers, for example never go from H1 to H3 without having a H2 in-between
Benefits of Semantic HTML
Here are a few benefits of semantic HTML
· Page load
· Accessibility
· Industry standards
· Quicker development
Page Load
By making your HTML uncluttered, using external stylesheets etc it will make the download time of your webpage quicker and also make the rendering speed of your webpage quicker – giving a much better user experience. And fast load times also impresses search engines so this is also an SEO benefit too.
Accessibility
Your website may be viewed and accessed by numerous types of devices and applications. Obviously the main application will be browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc. These browsers will all need to decipher what your webpage will look like and if your site is developed to industry standards it will make it a lot easier for you to produce webpage pages that are friendly for all browsers.
Screen readers for the visually impaired will also visit your website. These will read the content from your page to the user. So, by having your website structured correctly will enable screen readers navigate though your webpage in the correct order. This is also applicable to search engine robots. Search Engine robots will navigate through your webpages when they are being indexed. If things are not structured correctly then the search engine robot may index the page incorrectly.
Industry Standard
By following industry standard techniques your website will not be left behind when things change. As new versions of browsers come on the market they will accommodate webpages that follow industry standard techniques as these browsers are bound to these techniques themselves. By not following industry standard technique you will be exposing yourself to owning a website that may not render correctly beyond the current release of browsers.
Quicker Development
Once you have fully understood the semantics you will find it really easy and quick to develop and maintain webpages.
Remember, always keep styling in stylesheets. A webpage contains the content for the webpage and the stylesheet says how it will look. Keeping these two apart will make it easier and quicker for you to make changes as you will know exactly where to look from the offset.
Summary
Test your webpages using free online tools such as WAVE (http://wave.webaim.org/)
And remember, by coding your webpages semantically it will benefit everyone, you, ALL website visitors, SEO, cross browser support etc etc etc.

Welcome to the first posting on the Get Me On Top SEO blog.
In this blog I will share with you some very simple SEO techniques that will help drive traffic to your website. A lot of the hard work can be done by the webmasters / web developers before you need to consider looking to professional SEO consultants to help drive traffic to your website.
Before you go through these tips and before you contact a SEO company make a note of your website rankings for the major search engines. You can use this as your starting point and gauge how successful these tips are and how successful your SEO company are too.
Validate Your Web Pages
If your web pages are plagued with errors you have no guarantee that search engines can resolve these pages and index the content correctly. There are heaps of free online markup validators but the industry standard is to use the W3 markup validator. Go through all of your web pages and validate them against http://validator.w3.org.
Google Local
Google currently has a little less than 70% share of the global search engine market. By creating a Google Local profile, which is free, you will enable your website to be listed at the top of the search page along with a map pinpointing your exact geographical location.
Google Analytics
By setting up Google Analytics, which is free, for your website you will have lots of web site visitor statistics at hand that can be analysed and therefore give you the information to optimise your website further. Google Analytics gives you information about how the visitor found your website, what they did when they got to your website etc.
Page Title
This may be really obvious to most webmasters out there – but just in case not, I had to include this one. Ensure that your page titles are descriptive and unique within your website. Do not have Page Titles duplicated across multiple pages.
Page Description
This is another of those that is pretty obvious to most. Have a unique Page Description for each page within your website and ensure that it really does describe the contents of the web page. Page Descriptions are often displayed in the Search Engine results beneath the Page Title – so make sure its punchy and concise.
Headers
Header Tags, H1, H2, H3 … H6, within your web page are extremely important not only for your human visitors but for SEO too. A really good practice is to ensure the H1 tag contains content very similar to the Page Title and only have one H1 tag per page.
Web Directories
Links to your website are extremely important but not the be all and end all of SEO. First of all submit your website to DMOZ (Open Directory Project) and Yahoo directories. Search Engines value submissions to DMOZ and Yahoo very high because these submissions are checked manually for approval.
Submitting your website to web directories that are specific to the category of your website will be worth more than submitting your website to a directory that is not relevant to your website at all.
Optimise For Keywords
To identify keywords that are relevant to your website try and put yourself in the position of the visitor when using Google. What do you think they will type into Google and that you hope to appear on the first page for. Once you have found these keywords you will need to add these keywords to your website by including them in your web page description, page title, header tags, main content etc etc. But make sure you don’t over do it – if these keywords appear too often then Google will think the site is false and lower your ranking. If they are used too little then Google will think your website is not important enough for these keywords. Its a very tricky and complicated task and there are SEO tools that can help you with this.
Professional SEO
By going through each of the steps above will not only improve the quality of your website, possibily improve your website rankings and raise awareness of your website but it will also leave only in good stead for if / when you bring in professional SEO help as they would only go through each of these steps and charge you for it anyway.
But obviously there will be areas of SEO that we cannot add to this list and will mean that you will need to hire an SEO consultant. SEO Copywriting is a prime example. SEO Copywriting is a skill that we cannot explain easily in this blog but we all know we need it for effective SEO. The content of your web page is vitally important for human visitors and SEO but to author such content takes an awful lot of planning and studying of the business. So choose your SEO company very carefully and enquire about such skills and experience – don’t just believe what their home page says – check it out!!!
